Preganacy Scan
A Preganacy scan is a medical test used to identify a pregnancy. The doctor uses an ultrasound to see the baby's body structures. They will check for the presence of all four limbs, basic brain, bladder and nasal bone structures, as well as the nuchal translucency, which is a fluid sack on the back of the baby's neck. The size of this sack correlates with the presence of a chromosomal disorder.
If you are pregnant with twins or more, you will need to have an extra pregnancy scan. Generally, this scan occurs between 11 and 13 weeks of pregnancy. It allows doctors to confirm the number of babies in the uterus and check for any problems. If the ultrasound shows that there is more fluid than usual, you may need to have further testing. If you are concerned that your baby may not be developing properly, you will have to wait for more frequent pregnancies and scans to confirm their results.
During the scan, the sonographer will look at your baby's face, hands, and fingers. They will check whether the baby's kidneys are working well and whether the urine flows freely into the bladder. The bladder should be full at the time of the scan since the baby has been weeing every half hour. The sonographer will also examine the baby's hands and feet. Your sonographer will look at your baby's fingers and toes to determine whether they're developing normally. A sonographer will also check for a placenta, umbilical cord, and amniotic fluid.
Preganacy scan the gestational age of the baby can be determined with an ultrasound, the scan done in the first trimester is more accurate. The size of the fetus is largely dependent on your last period date, which is subject to several variables. A scan can also show if there's a heartbeat, which is important in determining whether or not you're carrying a healthy fetus. If there's no heartbeat, you may have miscarried.
A scan during the first trimester is not 100% accurate, but it will give you an idea of the sex of your baby. An ultrasound will also show the baby's heartbeat and movements. However, ultrasound is not completely accurate and you may have to wait until the 20-week scan before obtaining the correct answer. The 20-week scan is the standard screening for expecting parents. Those in the UK will get the results at around 20 weeks.
You should schedule a pregnancy scan if you have missed a period for more than a week. If you're planning to give birth after the first trimester, it is important to make sure you have a date to hold your baby. An ultrasound will also show whether you're carrying more than one baby. If you have an ectopic pregnancy, your doctor will use the scan results to calculate your chances of having a healthy baby.
