What Is a Gun?

In 1964, Malcolm X claimed the right to carry a shotgun and rifle. During the same period, Republican politicians moved to expand gun control measures. In response, Huey Newton and the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense started advocating the carrying of guns in public. The result was a surge in the number of homicides and suicides.

Today, the most common types of long guns are rifles and shotguns. These firearms are descendants of the musket. Rifles are named for their spiral grooves on the barrel, which impart spin to bullets. Shotguns, on the other hand, are predominantly smoothbore firearms that fire single solid projectiles. They are often used for hunting and law enforcement purposes.

Guns have a long and rich history. They have a variety of firing mechanisms and can come in a variety of shapes and sizes. During the early days of gun usage, bullets were simple balls that penetrated the flesh or other targets. Their small charge of gunpowder relies on a small fuse to create a larger explosion that propels the bullet out of the barrel.

There are many different types of rifles, including semi-automatics, automatic rifles, and assault rifles. In addition, the AK-47 and M16 are still used widely in military service, but new designs have emerged. The M14 was used until the 1960s in the U.S. military, but recoil caused accuracy to suffer. Eugene Stoner's AR-15 replaced the M14.

While many people understand the basic definition of a gun, the terminology can be confusing. Some guns are classified as automatic, semi-automatic, or high-caliber. Others have different names, such as assault rifle and machine gun. To understand the difference between a firearm, it is helpful to look at pictures of various types of guns.

A semi-automatic firearm fires one shot per cartridge equipped in the barrel. Single shot firearms must be reloaded manually by the operator. Repeating firearms are known as lever-action or pump-action. Most lever-action rifles are repeating firearms, which allow the user to load multiple cartridges in one motion.

Guns are powerful symbols for many people. They invoke a range of feelings, emotions, and political concerns. They are often associated with race and gender. Their symbolism allows them to become a culturally significant issue in a society. Guns are also a symbol of identity and culture. They trigger diverse themes about race, gender, and protection.
